COR-314, Mathematics and Human Nature is part of the Oglethorpe Core program. The Core is OU’s answer to general education, and “Math Core” is probably the very best part of it. Seriously – students agree that Math Core is the most important Core class they take at Oglethorpe. And these are not all students who love math – some of them specifically came to OU because they didn’t want to take a “regular” math class ever again.
I taught Math Core for the first time last spring, and I think I may have learned even more than my students during this process. Math Core is sort of about math, but also about our relationship to math, and about the creativity of math, but also about how math can be used to make (and break) arguments. I hope that I have the opportunity to teach this course again in the near future, because it was really one of the best teaching experiences I have ever had.
